Microbiology (BIOL 342, 4 credits with lab)

Microbiology is an option for fulfilling the core physiology requirement for Biological Sciences majors at UAF. The objectives of the course are to give students a strong foundation in microbiology, skills in microbiological lab techniques, to provide an opportunity to conduct original research by isolating, identifying and characterizing a bacterium, and to develop scientific literature research, writing, and oral presentation skills. Students also create original microbiology-themed art projects.

Environmental Microbiology (BIOL 457W/657, 3 credits, writing-intensive)

Environmental Microbiology provides a comprehensive overview of the role of microorganisms in environmentally relevant processes including bioremediation of pollutants, biogeochemical cycling and wastewater treatment. Upper level undergraduate students and graduate students gain expertise in microbial processes with an emphasis on their application to environmental quality issues. Class activities include lectures, discussions, technical and creative writing projects, and a field trip to the wastewater treatment plant.
